Project interview

Today our project interview has been held in Departmental Committee Room . I was so excited that I can't express in words .I apply for the post Research Engineer in Project CLIA ( Cross Lingual Information Access ) and EILMT ( English to Indian Language Machine Translation ) Projects. Sir will recruit me in the project EILMT .Our new salary will be 25k . I am very happy for that . I have waited for this day for almost a year . Finally the day came . I have appeared for the MTCT admission test and My name is in waiting list 6 . There is a little chance for getting chance in the course . Hope for the best .

V . Sriram Thesis

I read V .Sriram thesis . He has done SMT in a new way . His chapter 4 is Discriminative statistical machine translation using global lexical selection . He has done SMT on a new way . I have not read the way in any previous papers . Its a new method . I have the hard copy of his thesis . He has done his Phd from IIIT - hyderabad under Prof Rajiv Sanghal . He is a brilliant student . I met Sriram in IASNLP 2008 summer school . He was then doing PhD . Now he has completed his PhD . I like the field SMT . And I like Machine Translation . Sriram is a good guide . He has guided a project in IASNLP 2008 summer school .

It is difficult

When you are working in an institution , then study in another institution for a degree is very difficult . I can't quit the field NLP . If I draw my concentration from NLP , then Sir can read my face . He becomes angry at me . I can't bear this thing . SO I have decided not to quit the field NLP . But love the field NLP . I am happy when I think about NLP . I cant concentrate on any other field like OS ,Networking . Sir is telling me to get preparation for MTech Admission , but I don't want to study anything except NLP . I will read very deeply about NLP . I am not thinking about future . I am listening my heart . I will always listen to my heart . I will read NLP not for any purpose but for deep knowledge . This is my decision .

Again I need a job , because it will help to improve my family's financial condition . In any way I can't loose my job which is in present in JU in NLP field . I can sacrifice my study at the cost of job . Job is more important to me than my study .I want to work hard . Rest is the result . Jai shree krishna . Save me ...

IIIT - Hyd and NLP

Language Technology and research center in IIIT -Hyd is a very inspiring center if you want to work in NLP field . Prof Rajiv Sanghal and Prof Dipti Misra Sharma are working in NLP field . I have attended many conferences in IIIT - hyd . They are very strong in NLP . I am very much inspired by Prof Rajiv Sanghal . He has a great academic back ground . He is IIT kanpur alumni . I love this NLP field for them and for Prof Sudeshna Sarkar and for Prof Puspak Bhattacharya . These are great figures in NLP . I really want to study hard in NLP field .

1st Day in my college

I can remember the 1st class day in my college . Seniors came and they started ragging us . They give several difficult problems to solve . Again they asked us to perform certain task . They asked me to play the scene of rapping . I performed well . But they again gave me some sentences and then they replaced certain words with certain words which was quite embarrassing . I did not perform the task . A senior forced me to do the job . But I did not . Again Syamantak was asked to do act of masturbating in some steps . It was funny .Syamantak sang a song .He has a beautiful voice for singing . Again you cannot laugh at the task then you will be punished . This is the rule of ragging .Seniors asked us to act as DEVI DURGA . Soumyadeep was selected Laskmi devi .I can not remember the others. But Really It was funny .I and Devlina was selected as Husband and wife . We had to play a role in honeymoon husband wife . It was really enjoyable . Sometimes it was not funny specially for some adult reasons and for insulting comment .

Again When I was 2 nd or 3 rd or 4 th year I can remember that I did not rag any body . I was afraid of the rule and regulation of ragging . It is good that there are several rules and regulations against ragging .

New Machine

Today I have got a new laptop in lab . I am happy that now I can check my mail frequently . I don't have to go for another machine for checking mail . Actually my desk top machine is not responding . It is out of work . So Sir has told me to take a laptop . It's a IBM laptop . Black color with Bluetooth enabled . It has also a sound system so that I can voice chat with my colleagues in time of necessary . Now I am working on Morphological Synthesizer . Sudip da has done a wonderful job in Machine Translation . I am following what Sudip da has done . Soon Our project will start .Sir has told me that I am promoted to Research Engineer Post from Junior Research Engineer post . It is a really good news . My salary has also increased from 15K to 25K per month . All is well . Dipankar is my colleague and friend . I can share my feelings with him . He is a very nice guy who is very serious about study.He has done his master in JU and now doing his PhD from JU under Prof Sivaji Bandyopadhyay . his topic is emotion Analysis in Bengali and in English .

Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee is my inspiration .She is so hard working . I love her and respect her .Sir has given me her example that if we are hard working and if we have dedication then we can achieve our goals .She is really a AGNIKANYA .She is now chief minister of west Bengal .She is really a good politician . I personally respect her a lot .I obey her .She is so down to earth . She cares for people . She works for people . Her government is for the people , of the people and by the people . Trinomool Congress live long . Her party name is Trinomool Congress .I do not cast vote . But I like Mamata Banerjee .

IASNLP 2011

IASNLP 2011 has been started . Our sir Prof Sivaji Baqndyopadhyay has given a lecture on Sentiment Analysis . I have a great desire to attend the conference .But For short of money I am not attending this time IASNLP 2011 . Syllabus change in MTCT entranse exam

Sir has told me that there should be a change in MTCT entranse exam syllabus change . The new syllabus will be Gate Computer Science and Engineering syllabus . I am finding it difficult to get a chance in this exam. The old syllabus was only engineering mathematics of Gate . I have prepared for that . But .... .Oh! God save me . I don't know what will happen ...

Plagiarism Detection

Plagiarism detection is associated field of authorship attribution .Plagiarism detection can be of two types . One is external and another is intrinsic . In external plagiarism detection you are given a plagiarised document and a set of source documents from where the given document has been plagiarised . NOw you have to detect the portion of the given document and the portion of the sourse document which has been plagiarised. In intrinsic plagiarism detection you are not given the source documents .Instead you have to detect from the plagiarised document the plagiarised portion of the document .I think external plagiarism detection is more easy that intrinsic plagiarism detection .This is my opinions .
In our lab Santanu and Aniruddha is working on plagiarism detection on external basis.Sir has told me to read related documents on plagiarism detection .They are also working on wikipedia vandalism .I don't know the latest work .

Something new

Tanmoy and Bidhan has completed writing thesis . They are of MCSE student final year .In the mean time Tanmoy has printed his thesis entitled "MultiWord Expression" .Bidhan has worked on Question Answering . I have two papers published with Tanmoy . Tanmoy is very brilliant student . He has scored more than 90 % in Higher secondary exam . I have started reading Tanmoy's thesis . It is more that 200 pages thesis. It has an elaborated description of what he has done in the entire period. Tanmoy has also worked on Stylometry or authorship attribution . I have read some documents on Plagiarism detection . I don't know I will be successful or not . But I am trying my best in reading some documents on the topic .

Today I am feeling relaxed . My machine is not working .But I have another machine on 3rd floor . I can access the machine . Again I can access Kishore da'a lab machine . Lab is empty basically .SO I can easily access any machine . But for temporary .Not for permanent .

I am designing a Morphological Analyzer and Synthesizer in SRS format .It is very difficult . I am taking help from Sudip Da's thesis . Anup is helping me in word document formatting ...

Foundation Of Satistical Natural Language Processing

The book written by Christopher D.Manning and Hinrich Schutze is very difficult to understand . The language of this book is not so easy . I have read WSD ( Word Sense Disambiguation ) chapter of this book and I realized that the language of this book is really tough . If you are a new comer in NLP field then you may not understand all the sentences of this book . I have some knowledge on NLP though I think this book is for advanced learner in NLP . Those who have a profound knowledge in NLP those people only can understand this book . Other chapters are also too difficult to understand ..

Rhetorical Structure Theory

Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) is basically a relation pattern between two part of a sentence. The main part or clause is known as Nucleus and the secondary part or clause is known as Satellite . now RST defines some relations between satellite and nucleus .

There are four points to remember :

Relation definition consists of four fields :

Today it is raining

Today it is raining. I love raining . I like rainy season a lot . It is now summer , or actually it is now spring , but there are some splashes of rain in the evening . I like it very much . Actually rain brings down the temperature below the normal range . People get relieve . Now I am in Jadavpur University . I am in Kishore da's laboratory . As I have no net connection in my machine so I have to check my mails in Kishore da's laboratory machine . I have finished one book on Natural Language Processing (NLP). I am revising the book written by Jurafsky and Martine . I am also following another book ---The Statistical Foundation of Natural Language Processing by Christofer Manning .The problem is that I have only the .pdf version of the book . I have no hard copy of the book . There is a hard copy of the book in our lab , but Santanu has taken that copy . So I have to read the .pdf version of the book .

Yesterday my sister has come to visit our home . She has a cute baby . I love him a lot . He is so cute that my mother calls him Krishna -- the lord of love . He is only nine months old . He can not walk . He just crawls . He is so cute , that I could not describe in words . He has got fever . SO in today morning my sister has gone with him to a child specialist . From there they will go to their home at Kasba near Ruby .

I am taking preparation for MTCT course

I am taking preparation for the MTCT course (Master in Technology in Computer Technology 2011 ) . I am solving math problem from Differential calculas ,Integration , Maximum - Minimum , and also from Matrix , Diterminant , Eigen Value , eigen vector , probability theory , Propositional logic , predicate calculas etc . I am also reading C programming language . I have to read hard because I have to get a chance in the course . I love the computer science & engineering subjects and I also love mathematics . I have scored a 37 percentile score in Cat and got a PI ,GD call from an Institution . But my aim was IIMs . SO I ignored the call . I have to work hard and read hard . So that I can be established in life . People will love me then . I also love my research work which is on Natural Language Processing . It is also very interesting field . In future I have a dream to do PhD in the subject if I get chance . For that I have to complete Mtech . UGC has applied new rules and regulations on PhD work . Now doing PhD has become more difficult . But I have to do it ....

Doren da has completed his PhD work and more news

Thoudam Doren Sing has completed his PhD work . He has submitted his PhD thesis . The thesis work is on Manipuri to English Example Based Machine Translation . He has given a party ( A dinner ) in Banzara in Jadavpur . The party was very special . We ate Biriyani , Mutton preparation , fried rice etc . We enjoyed a lot .

Asif da has now become a father of a new born baby . Yes Sreeparna di has given birth a new baby . We visited both mother and baby at a hospital at park street . Our sir is very happy . He told that a new member has come to our NLP group .

Amitava has start writing his thesis . He has already completed his research work . This is the time to finish his thesis writing . Amitava and Dipankar have returned from Japan Safely . They have a horrible experience of earth quake in Japan . Dipankar was very tensed . He cried a lot in Japan . He was hopeless . But there is god so they returned from Japan safely . they returned before their planned day (which was 1 st of April ) . They returned earlier because of the Tsunami and earth quake in Japan .

What does Research mean ?

Research in Computer Science & Engineering field and in Natural Language Processing field means you have to be strong in Programming language such as Java , C , C++ and you should have a deep knowledge in English Grammar and Bengali Grammar if you are a Bengali . At the same time you should have a deep knowledge in Probability theory and in mathematics . You have to be strong in some knowledge of Linguistics .Because Natural Language Processing needs some linguistics knowledge . You have to be a complete package of all this .Machine Translation needs your deep knowledge in source language and target language grammar . Again you have to read your related field - research papers and thesis papers available in internet .You have to study a lot these research papers and thesis papers for to be up to date with your related research field .

My recent research topic is Collocations

Currently I am working on collocation detection in English Language with a team in JU. In the team there are Tanmoy (MCSE student) , Tanik (Project staff) and Soujanya (BCSE student) . I am helping them to make them understand what is collocations and its meanings and its usage . I am reading a thesis on Multi word expressions of one student of Timoty Boldwin . He / She famous is Multi word expression . I have also read two book chapters on Multi word expressions .

Collocations & Multi Word Expressions

Collocations is a group of words used as a single unit of word in sentence . All idioms and Phrasal verbs and Multi word expressions are collocations . Example of collocations is "Many thanks to you" . Here "Many thanks" is a collocations . One property of collocations is non substitutability . It means if you replace word in collocations with its synonym then it will no longer be a collocations . Such as if you replace "many" to "several" then "several thanks" will not be a collocations and it is not used in good English. Collocations can be of two types . Decomposable collocations and non decomposable collocations . Decomposable collocations are those whose meaning can be derived from its constituent words . Such as "Spill the bean" ---- its meaning can be derived from the word "Spill" . Non decomposable collocations are those whose meaning can not be derived from its constituent words . Such as "Kick the bucket " -- its meaning "to die" can not be derived from its constituent words "kick", "the","bucket" . All nominal compounds , Determiner less preposition phrases , Verb particle constructions are examples of collocations . There are several methods to detect collocations in English language . Such tests are t - test , chi square test , P M I test , log likelihood test etc.

Saraswati Puja

Saraswati is the goddess of learning . The worship of goddess Saraswati is called Saraswati Puja . This is a special day in Bengali Calender . This day is called Bengali's Valentine Day . The girls wear Sari and boys wear Panjabi on that special day . Every house make arrangement for the worship of the goddess . House mates gave
homage (Anjali ) to the goddess in cleaned cloths and they remain fast until puja is complete . We also celebrate the puja in schools . We have Khichuri in our lunch with Alor Dam ( a special dish to be taken in any puja ) . On that days boys propose girls and they also make new friends or girl friends . That is why it is called Bengali's Valentine Day . This puja is also celebrate in localities . They play mike and high sound volume systems to celebrate the puja . This is awesome .

I also celebrated this puja this year in the same way like previous year. I also took Khichuri in lunch with my family . My sister had come to visit our house with her son Ayan . I love Ayan very much . He is such a lovely child . Too sweet . He is only nine months old . My mother calls him Krishna ( in the name of God Krishna ) . I call him Gopal ( in the name of God Gopal ) . He is a precious jewel . We all love him a lot ..

I met Asif da today

I met Asif da today . He is an encouraging figure . He has done his PhD program from Jadavpur University under Prof Sivaji Bandyopadhyay and then done his post doctoral research from Heidelberg University and now in Italy in Torrento University . But he has got an offer for Assistant Professor Post in IIT Patna . His wife Sreeparna Di got also an offer for same post in IIT Patna . She has done her PhD program in Pattern Recognition field form ISI Kolkata . I love & respect him and her a lot . He has told me that he reads my Blog . Oh! great news . At least I found one person who appreciates my blog writing . I am very happy for that . Also some of my friends has told me that they also read my blog . Nice . Really nice. I know Asif da from 2007 from joing in Jadavpur University as a Junior Research Engineer . From then on he has given me immense encouragement for working in the field of Natural Language Processing . He is really a good senior and he helped me a lot in my tour to Hyderabad in IIIT-hyd. I really enjoy his company . He is such a nice person , such an educated person . His wife is also a nice person . She also loves me a lot . She is expecting this time . Hope they will have a lovely baby .

My father's decision

In the previous week I got a call from one Collabra consultancy company for an interview in IBM for a job opportunity . I got excited , because IBM is one of the good company . I told my parents that I want to face the interview , but my father got angry . He told me to sit for M tech admission test and complete the M tech course and then go for PhD program . Alas , I am dead . A long way I have to go to satisfy my parents . I don't know I will do that or not . But I have to try . That is all my story . OK ,I like to study , but I hate calculation and English vocabulary. SO my score or percentile in CAT is low . I like computer science subjects , so I do not want to change my topic of study . And also I like my research topic that is Natural Language Processing . In this subject I like most machine translation . I don't know what will happen in future . but hope for the best .

In roads autos are available frequently , but buses are not so available in this strike hour . So as a result autos are crowed with passengers . Taxis are also available . SO don't worry my dear passengers , you will reach your short length destination by autos or taxis . I don't know about the fare of autos this time . There may be an increase in fare for this strike duration , I am thinking of that because during Puja days there was a fare hike in autos fare . So I think that there may be an increase in autos fare during this duration . As everyday it is reported that taxi fare is double in strike hour. This is not totally fare . I can't bear this type of fare rise in strike hour . They do not think about the daily poor passenger . Who will think about them ? Our Govt is deaf .They give no attention to the poor people . I am not politically attacking our Govt but I am telling the truth . I am totally dissatisfied with this type of anomaly during strike hour . Things should be changed . I hope in the next election new party will form new Govt and they will correct the situation . Hope for the best .

Today is CITU 's 3 hour transportation strike

I hate strike . It is really a big problem of Kolkata . Our daily life becomes standstill in strike . I can not support any kind of strike on any issue . It is really disturbing . Today's strike is for price rise of petrol in recent time . Today there is 12 ' o clock to 3 ' o clock strike . All kind of transportation vehicles will be standstill during the hour . People will have to face this big problem . The strike is during the office hour. All office goer will be disturbed by this strike . They cannot move until the strike is ended at 3 ' o clock . I don't have to face the problem as I come early in the office ( which is our Natural Language Processing lab in Computer Science & Engineering dept in Jadavpur University ) at 10.30 am . And I go to home at 6' o clock . Though these months there is no project so I go early home at 3' o ' clock . Back to the topic , strike is a big curse to the society .I do not support any political party for organizing a strike for any issue . Strike should be banned by law immediately . Then society will be helpful and there will be sign of a progressed society . Spoiling a working day is not a good idea. Strike disturbs our daily working life . We have to take care of that . We have to think of that .

My experience in IIT Kgp (A few new words )

I had a dream to work in IIT Kgp (Indian Institute Of Technology , Kharagpur ). I loved to dream to work under any professor of IIT kgp . SO I contacted with Prof Sudeshna Sarkar . She is a professor of computer Science & engineering in IIT Kgp . At first I told her that I have quit my job because I wanted to do some research work under you (Sudeshna Sarkar) .She told me that currently she had no project to recruit me but she told me to call her after 2 months . I called her after 2 months . She told me that a new project has come on Bengali Spelling Checking. She gave me to read Lavenstein Automata . It was too difficult . I went to Kgp and stayed there . I spent my day & night to read documents on spelling checking . But I was failed . I was too frustrated . I could not cope with the situation . I could not understand Lavenstein Automata and that IIT is very difficult . I made a mistake quitting my job . Because I am not too intelligent to work in IIT Kgp. It is very tough . From this I take a lesson that there should be a limit between your dream and your ability . You should control your dream so that later you don't have to repent on your decision. As I did . It is very nice to have a dream to work in top most institutes but it is ,also in same time, very difficult to work there . Otherwise your attempt will go in vain . Actually I was inspired by my friends who work in IITs or had degree in IITs , but now I realise how there are intelligent that me . I salute them . They are realy great . There are really true scientist .

ILMT project will come soon

Our team leader IIIT-Hyderabad (International Institute Of Information Technology - Hyderabad , near Gachibowli Stadium ) has got a mail of starting of ILMT project ( Indian language to Indian Language Machine Translation Project ). Sir has told me that . It is a great news . We will be recruited in that project once the project comes to Jadavpur University . In JU project will come soon . Also Sir told that the project will start at a previous date of May 2010 . That means all the employee will get salary form May 2010 . It is a great news . I am very excited . Without a salary Life is in a bad condition . Now things will improve soon . I am very happy . I told the news to my mother . She is also very happy . Once the project will start I will be in work in full mode . There will be no delay submitting tasks. I need money to do master degree and it is necessary . Because I like to study . Qualifying in GATE examination is not possible for me for now . As it needs deep preparation . I have no time for that . Thought it will be grate if you qualify Gate Examination . I will appear later in Gate once I have my full preparation . I want to do a PhD but without a master degree it is difficult. SO I will do a master degree first . This is my aim . In the mean time if I get a job in any good company then I will go for that . Because doing a good job in a good company is also a good thing . I have a plan to learn J2EE from NIIT - Jadavpur . It will cost around 10 thousand . It may help me to get a job in a good company . My friend told me that .
